However, it's important to keep in mind that many dealers don't understand the difference between OBD and OBD2. If your vehicle isn't OBD2 compliant, you won't be able to use a generic OBD2 scan tool like ElmScan to obtain diagnostic information from it. But my car has a 16-pin OBD connector, shouldn't it be OBD2 compliant? No, not necessarily. Many European and Asian manufacturers equipped their vehicles with 16-pin D-shaped connectors long before they began installing OBD2 systems on these vehicles. An interesting fact to note is that most non-OBD compliant vehicles had a DLC that wasn't fully compliant with the SAE J1979 standard.
